Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area: East Texas’s Off-Road Paradise

Just a few miles north of Gilmer, a red-dirt wonderland awaits.

If you’re looking for an adventure that gets your adrenaline pumping without requiring a cross-country road trip, look no further than your own backyard. Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area (BMRA), nestled in the piney woods just five miles north of Gilmer, is one of the premier off-road destinations in the entire South-Central United States — and it’s practically in our neighborhood.

## A Legacy of Off-Road Adventure

Barnwell Mountain didn’t happen overnight. It opened in 2000 as the very first property of the Texas Motorized Trail Coalition (TMTC), a non-profit organization dedicated to creating safe, exciting, and well-maintained motorized recreational spaces for Texans. Over the past two-plus decades, it has grown into a beloved institution, drawing riders and drivers from across East Texas and well beyond.

Spread across approximately 1,850 acres of gorgeous East Texas terrain, the park sits atop the rolling Barnwell Mountains, where towering pines, red clay hillsides, and winding creek bottoms create a landscape that’s as beautiful as it is challenging.

## More Than 200 Miles of Trails

The crown jewel of BMRA is its trail system — and it’s an impressive one. With over 200 miles of trails crisscrossing the property, there’s something for every skill level and every type of machine. Dirt bike riders can take advantage of 27 miles of dedicated singletrack, while adventure motorcycle enthusiasts will appreciate the 16-mile ADV trail that winds through some of the most scenic terrain on the property.

All trails are clearly marked with signage indicating vehicle type and difficulty level, so riders and drivers always know what they’re getting into before they commit. Whether you’re a beginner easing your way through the woods on a four-wheeler or a seasoned off-roader pushing your limits on the extreme trail, BMRA has a path for you.

“I’ve got 80-year-old dirt bikers that come out and ride the extreme trail every weekend,” said Park Manager Sherry Smith. “It’s amazing to watch.”

The variety is a big part of what keeps people coming back. Tight, technical wooded trails give way to open rolling hills, creek crossings, and sweeping views of the East Texas landscape. It’s the kind of place that rewards exploration.

## A True Family Destination

One of the things that sets Barnwell Mountain apart from many off-road parks is its commitment to being a family-friendly experience. This isn’t just a place for hardcore enthusiasts — it’s a destination where parents, grandparents, and kids of all ages can find something to enjoy together.

The park features multiple pavilions scattered throughout the property, perfect for family picnics, group gatherings, or a shaded rest stop between trail runs. A on-site food truck provides convenient meals so you don’t have to pack everything in. The atmosphere is consistently described by visitors as welcoming and respectful, with a community feel that’s rare in larger parks.

“Most everybody that comes through the gate is happy to be here,” Smith noted. “There is a lot to do out here. Our visitors love the diversity of the trails, they love the family atmosphere, and they love that it’s clean.”

## Stay the Weekend

A day trip to Barnwell is great — but a weekend stay is even better. The park offers a full range of overnight accommodations to suit different preferences and budgets.

For those who prefer a bit of comfort after a long day on the trails, the park’s rental cabins are a popular choice. Several newer cabins sleep four and come equipped with queen beds, bunk beds, satellite television, and private bathrooms with spacious showers. Thoughtful touches like extra outlets, night-lights on the faucets, and rock landscaping around the cabins (to minimize the notorious red dirt that stains everything) make for a surprisingly pleasant stay. No Wi-Fi — which, honestly, might be part of the charm.

For a more rustic experience, five bunkhouses offer no-frills shelter without plumbing. And for those who never leave home without their rig, the park’s RV campground features 18 campsites capable of accommodating nearly any setup. Traditional tent camping is also available for those who want to sleep under the stars.

## Events and Community

Throughout the year, BMRA hosts special events that bring the off-road community together. Fan favorites like the “Jeep Versus SxS Showdown” draw participants and spectators from across the region, adding a competitive and festive energy to the park’s already lively atmosphere. These events are a testament to the tight-knit community that has grown up around Barnwell Mountain over the years.

## Getting There

Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area couldn’t be more conveniently located for East Texans. The park sits at 6284 N. State Highway 155, just a short drive from Gilmer. For those coming from farther afield, it’s approximately 120 miles east of Dallas, 225 miles from Houston, and only 80 miles west of Shreveport, Louisiana — making it a realistic weekend getaway for a wide swath of the region.

The park is open Thursday through Sunday. Thursday hours run from noon to 10:00 PM; Friday and Saturday from 8:00 AM to midnight; and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Trails close at 10:00 PM nightly.

## Worth Every Mile

Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area is the kind of place that reminds you just how much adventure is available right here in East Texas. Whether you’re a lifelong off-road enthusiast or someone looking for a new way to experience the outdoors, BMRA delivers — with well-kept trails, welcoming staff, solid amenities, and scenery that’ll make you glad you made the trip.
