Protect Yourself During National Consumer Protection Week

National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW), scheduled for March 1–7, 2026, is a nationwide initiative coordinated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to help consumers understand their rights and avoid scams. Organizations across the country, including the Better Business Bureau,  participate by sharing education and resources designed to prevent fraud and identity theft.

NCPW has been observed annually for more than 25 years and serves as a reminder that consumer awareness remains one of the strongest tools in preventing financial loss. According to the FTC’s most recent Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, consumers reported losing more than $10 billion to fraud, a record high, with imposter scams, online shopping scams, and investment fraud among the most reported categories.

In addition, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reported billions in losses from cyber-enabled crimes, highlighting the continued rise of phishing schemes, business email compromise, and tech support scams.

In today’s digital marketplace, scams evolve quickly. During NCPW, the FTC hosts free educational events and publishes updated guidance focused on:

  • Scam prevention
  • Identity theft protection
  • Online privacy and cybersecurity
  • Fraud reporting tools

BBB encourages consumers to adopt the following protective practices year-round:

Exercise caution with unfamiliar contacts. Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person, especially through wire transfers, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or prepaid debit cards  which are common payment methods requested by scammers.

Be wary of unsolicited communications. Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments from unexpected emails or text messages. These may contain malware or phishing attempts.

Verify authenticity independently. Scammers can replicate logos and official graphics. Always verify requests by contacting organizations directly using official contact information and not what is provided in a suspicious message.

Don’t trust caller ID alone. Caller ID can be spoofed. If a caller pressures you for personal information or payment, hang up and contact the organization directly.

Ensure secure online transactions. Look for “https://” and a lock icon in the browser bar. Shop only with reputable retailers and use credit cards when possible for added fraud protection.

Research businesses thoroughly. Before making any purchase or donation, visit BBB.org to review a company’s business profile, complaint history, and accreditation status.

Protect sensitive information. Treat Social Security numbers, banking information, insurance data, and login credentials as confidential.

Resist high-pressure tactics. Scammers create urgency to push quick decisions. Take time to verify claims before acting.

Get agreements in writing. Always request written documentation for contracts or major purchases.

Be mindful on social media. Limit personal details online. Oversharing can make you a target for personalized scams.

Keep travel plans private. Posting vacation details publicly may signal your home is unattended.

Shred sensitive documents. Dispose of financial and medical documents securely to prevent identity theft.

Monitor financial accounts regularly. Review bank and credit card statements frequently for unauthorized transactions.

Use strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication. Create complex passwords and enable two-factor authentication when available. Keep devices and software updated.
