Gilmer and Spring Hill Student Council Students Unite to Support Kerr County Flood Victims (Gilmer & Longview, TX)

In a beautiful show of compassion and community spirit, students from Gilmer High School and Spring Hill High School joined hands to help families devastated by the recent flooding in Kerr County. Putting aside school boundaries, the student councils came together for one purpose: to serve others in a time of great need. The initiative was led by Student Council Sponsors Mechelle Graham of Gilmer High School and Susan Curtis of Spring Hill High School, who helped organize donation drives across both communities. The response was overwhelming. With support from students, families, and residents in both Gilmer and Longview, more than 1,000 items were collected, including non-perishable food, hygiene products, and clothing.
“What started as a simple conversation quickly turned into a mission to help,” said Mechelle Graham. “This wasn’t about schools—it was about humanity. We’re proud to be a part of a community that shows up for others.” Donation stations were set up in each town, and community members of all ages stepped forward with donations in hand. The drive showed that when it comes to helping neighbors, East Texas stands together. Susan Curtis shared her gratitude, saying, “I’m just so thankful for our students and the community for showing up. The way everyone came together to support a cause bigger than ourselves—it was truly moving.” To make sure the donated goods reach those in need, Carmela Davis Tax Service generously offered to transport all items to Kerr County. This act of service is a testament to the strength and heart of the people in Gilmer and Longview. While the two schools may cheer from opposite sidelines during football season, their united effort proves that when it matters most, they are one community—with one heart—ready to lift others up.
