Central Texas Beekeepers School Now Accepting Students

Students at the Bee School can suit up and watch while a hive of live bees is opened and inspected.  The school will be held March 2 in Brenham.

The Fourteenth Annual Central Texas Beekeepers School will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Brenham High School in Brenham, Texas.  The school is open to the public for anyone interested in keeping bees or who wants to learn about bees.

While attending the school, you will learn the parts of the hive, how to build or assemble your equipment, how to install bees, the proper procedure for lighting a smoker and how to inspect your bees.  You will learn how to dress to minimize the possibility of being stung and what to do if you are stung.

One of the most popular features of the school is the ability to observe a hive of bees while it is opened and inspected. Weather permitting, you can “suit up” and be present while an experienced beekeeper completes this operation.  Participants will see how to extract honey and how to care for it before you eat it or give it to your family or friends.

Early admission to the school is $90 for the first adult and $85 for additional adults in the family.  Active and retired military will be $70.  Cost for students above 12 (including college students) is $35.  Children under the age of 12 attending classes with a parent are $20.  Registration fees increase after Feb. 29.  “Walk Up” registration the day of the school will be $110.  All local and state Covid protocols at the time of the school will be observed.  We will monitor the health situation and will keep registrants informed.

The school starts at 8:00 a.m. and will be over at 4:30 p.m.  The cost of the school includes a catered Bar-B-Q meal with Blue Bell Ice Cream and a “school book” with information about beekeeping.  Door prizes and a complete bee hive will be held at 4:15 p.m.
