Roman Arnoldy was one of the smartest men I ever knew. He held many patents which made the world of industry run more efficiently, which saved money, which helped cut pollution, which resulted in less downtime in energy producing areas.
When he was in his late 80s and I was in my late forties, I would meet with him at his home. He maintained his home office away from his office at his company’s headquarters in Houston. He retained his sharp mind, capable of assessing and articulating matters of science.
In those late 1990s, the topic of global warming was catching on and in discussion. Once I asked him about his point of view, because he was a lifelong scientist with accolades as long as your arm.
“Jimmy, the science does not support the alarmist view on global warming!” He always called me “Jimmy,” which made me feel good, feel young.
Mr. Arnoldy explained. “The more carbon dioxide in the air, the more plants grow. The more plants grow, the more oxygen is produced. It’s a self-correcting problem! Nature achieves balance. That is its way.”
I recall a study a few years ago, aided by the science of satellite photos of the earth, with its objective the counting of trees in the world. It was believed at the time there were about 400 billion trees in the world. Because trees produce oxygen, it is important to know how many there are.
After the satellite study was done, it was determined there are actually about 3 trillion trees in the world, a figure more than SEVEN times as high as previously believed.*
Further science establishes that 97% of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are not man-made at all. They are water vapor.**
Some of us recall the climate hysteria of the 1970s and 1980s, which “science” said the Earth was entering a new Ice Age, that the coming cold weather would drastically alter climate. It was going to stop the Gulf Stream, which is essential to milder weather in England, for example.
Then along came the 1990s and the new hysteria was “global warming.” Al Gore, having invented the internet (according to his own delirium) pushed the notion that global warming would surely melt the ice of the north and south poles, flooding coastal regions the world over.
It has been twenty or so years since the Gore predictions. America’s richest politicians are still buying and owning oceanfront properties, whose coastlines remain exactly where they were twenty-five years ago.
Grifters require a theme for their grift. If they want you to “buy” what they are selling, they have to convince you to fear not buying such notions. Don’t buy Climate Change. Climate always changes, adjusting to new factors. A volcano explodes. Suddenly new carbon is belched into the air. It may take time to dissipate, but it will dissipate. That is how our Earth functions. It goes on millennia after millennia.
Roman Arnoldy explained all this to me twenty-five years ago, and in the twenty years he’s been gone, I have never read or heard anything which effectively countered his sound point of view.
