The statewide gas price average in Texas is $3.83 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA Texas. That price is 14 cents more than on this day last week and $1.07 more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $4.22 per gallon, while drivers in Houston are paying the least at $3.69 per gallon. The national average is $4.27, which is 13 cents more than a week ago and $1.08 more than a year ago.
Crude oil has returned to the $100 per barrel range for the first time since July amid continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz. The increase is putting additional pressure on gasoline prices at a time of year when pump prices would typically begin easing as summer travel demand declines.
“Texas drivers are seeing a noticeable increase at the pump as higher crude oil prices work their way into the retail gasoline market,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. “Prices would normally be trending lower this time of year, but continued volatility in the oil market is keeping upward pressure on gasoline prices. Drivers should be prepared for additional fluctuations in the days ahead.”
