SAU sees positive enrollment trends amid changing higher education landscape

MAGNOLIA, AR (09/08/2026) Southern Arkansas University enters the fall 2026 semester with encouraging momentum in several areas, even as the University, like colleges nationwide, absorbs the impact of a decline in international student enrollment.
Beginning freshmen enrollment grew 2.9% this fall. Domestic undergraduate enrollment overall held largely steady, underscoring the strength of SAU’s recruiting pipeline and its relationships with concurrent enrollment partners across the region.
Graduate international enrollment has declined by approximately 92.3% since its peak in 2022, reflecting a significant shift that has led SAU to diversify its graduate offerings and develop new pathways for students. A key part of that strategy is expanding graduate certificate programs that provide focused, graduate-level training in areas tied to workforce needs. The Educational Examiner certificate saw a 93.8% increase in enrollment this fall. Other areas of graduate growth included the Master of Public Administration, up 40%; School Counseling K-12, up 31.8%; and Library Media and Information Specialist, up 33.3%.
SAU’s focus on workforce needs extends beyond its graduate offerings. Through initiatives such as the University’s STEM partnership and LiTHIUMLEARNS, SAU continues to build connections between academic programs, industry and emerging workforce needs. These efforts complement the University’s expansion of specialized graduate certificates and other flexible academic pathways designed to prepare students for evolving career opportunities.
These positive areas of growth come amid a significant nationwide decline in international student enrollment, particularly among graduate students. SAU’s international graduate enrollment fell from 227 to 74 students this fall. According to projections from NAFSA: Association of International Educators and JB International, based on data from the Institute of International Education’s Spring 2026 Snapshot, nearly two-thirds of responding U.S. institutions expect declines in international enrollment for the 2026-27 academic year. The analysis projects as many as 111,000 fewer international students nationwide. Visa processing challenges, travel restrictions and policy uncertainty are among the factors cited as contributing to the decline.
“We are encouraged by the growth we are seeing among our incoming freshmen and in several of our graduate programs,” said Dr. Bruno Hicks, SAU president. “At the same time, we are continuing to look for new ways to meet students where they are. Expanding flexible academic pathways and strengthening partnerships with industry allow us to create new opportunities for students while supporting the workforce needs of our region and state.”
University leadership began tracking enrollment indicators tied to national demographic trends and international student enrollment more than a year ago. Looking ahead, SAU will continue to strengthen its recruiting pipeline, foster relationships with concurrent-enrollment partners and expand flexible, workforce-relevant academic opportunities designed to reach new student populations.
