AAA Texas: State Gas Price Average Holds Steady as National Average Nears Record August
The statewide gas price average in Texas is $3.63 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA Texas. That price is one cent less than on this day last week and 83 cents more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.91 per gallon, while drivers in McAllen are paying the least at $3.45 per gallon. The national average is $4.09, one cent less than a week ago and 88 cents more than a year ago.
While Texas drivers are paying more than they were at this time last year, the statewide average remains well below the record high reached in June 2022. For the first time on record, the national average has remained above $4 per gallon every day in August, putting the month on track to become the most expensive August ever at the pump, surpassing the previous August record set in 2022. Continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz is keeping crude oil prices in the $80 per barrel range and remains a key factor influencing pump prices.
“Texas gas prices have remained relatively steady in recent weeks, but drivers are still paying more than they were a year ago,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “Nationally, prices remain around $4.10 per gallon, and August is shaping up to be the most expensive on record. Continued uncertainty in the global oil market and crude oil prices in the $80 per barrel range remain important factors to watch as we approach the Labor Day travel weekend.”
