Real-life cowboys get their time to shine at this rodeo sanctioned by the Working Ranch Cowboys Association. Teams demonstrate ranching skills and training by competing in events that include bronc riding, cattle sorting, and team doctoring, where competitors on horseback separate animals, rope them, and mark them as “doctored” in a race against the clock. Committed to preserving western heritage and providing financial help to ranching families and scholarships to Sul Ross State University’s rodeo program, the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo also features a trade show, youth team events, and an awards presentation.
The Silent Wings Museum, dedicated to American World War II glider pilots, hosts this event that honors America’s “Greatest Generation.” Spirit of ’45 Day, a National Day of Remembrance that’s observed annually on the second Sunday of August, commemorates the day President Truman announced the end of WWII. The museum, housed in the former South Plains Army Airfield site in Lubbock, invites visitors to come and enjoy programs and family activities that pay tribute to the courageous spirit of the men and women who fought in WWII. Be sure to check out the restored CG-4A gliders on exhibit at the museum.
In 1886, the United States received a gift from France—the Statue of Liberty by sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. Few could predict how significant Lady Liberty would become to future generations, and, in celebration of America’s 250th birthday, this exhibition explores her impact in art. From her creation as a national monument to her evolution as a symbolic figure in American culture and history, the Statue of Liberty is displayed through nearly 100 works in a variety of mediums, including one of Bartholdi’s early casts of the statue and Roy Lichtenstein’s I Love Liberty print from 1982.
