Cable median barrier approved for portion of State Loop 281

Project scheduled to begin in May

March 27, 2026

ATLANTA – Cable median barrier is scheduled to be installed soon on a portion of State Loop 281 in Harrison County, according to plans awarded in February by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The portion of roadway that will receive the improvements extends from Interstate 20 to the Gregg County line, about 5.5 miles of roadway. The area will also receive new metal beam guard fence. “Cable median barriers consist of several strands of high-tension cable and are designed to catch errant vehicles in the median before they cross over into oncoming traffic,” said Marshall Area Engineer Jacob Vise.

Gratiot Construction, LTD. was awarded the project with a low bid of $1,619,890. Work is expected to begin in May and take about seven months to complete. The estimated completion date is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
