| Water for People, Not Polluters Corpus Christi—The passage of Proposition B is proof that Corpus Christians are ready for a new direction for our city. Voters withstood the mischaracterization and smears against the Proposition levied by former and current Council members and Mayors and heavy industry organizations, PR campaigns, and PACs such as My Town, Our Future, Voices for Coastal Bend Energy, Coastal Bend Coalition, and Citizens for Responsible Policy. Its victory is proof that the community is tired of being plundered and being told that we should be grateful to those who benefit from this dynamic. Proposition B represents the first step in many towards real environmental justice for the region. Although it is likely that industry will try to block its implementation through legal channels, TCE stands ready to defend the sovereignty of Corpus Christi voters.. Texas Campaign for the Environment knows that the success of this proposition was not possible without the countless hours hundreds of canvassers dedicated to forcing the issue of fairness to the forefront of water policy. TCE owes a special and enormous amount of gratitude in particular to core partner, For the Greater Good, for their contributions and leadership. They were the first in the region to expose the Drought Surcharge Exemption Fee as a grave, structural injustice built into the city’s drought policies back in 2018. It was their courageous insistence for years that Corpus Christians could and should not accept this that laid the bedrock for the Fair Water Amendment in the first place. Their organization’s moral clarity, bold vision, and unwavering love for community that should inspire folks everywhere build from the bottom up. QUOTES Tonight, Corpus Christi residents proved that organized people can take on some of the most powerful interests in our region and win. Proposition B began with ordinary residents asking a simple question: why should working families be expected to carry the burden of drought while some of the largest corporate water users receive special treatment? We turned that question into more than 18,000 petition signatures, defended our right to put it before voters, built a people-led field operation that reached thousands of people across this city, and organized a coalition that crossed neighborhoods, generations, labor, environmental justice, and political lines. Heavy industry fought this amendment because it challenges an arrangement that has benefited them for years. Our community embraced it because people understand fairness when they see it. This victory is bigger than one water policy. It is proof that residents can use the democratic tools available to us to take greater control over the resources and decisions that shape our lives. Prop B is not the end of that work. It is a beginning. – Armon Alex, Fair Water Amendment Director “With the passage of Prop B, we know Corpus Christi voters are ready for candidates who will champion policies that center communal needs rather than corporate greed. Our broad coalition that we’ve built over many years will use this momentum to support Clean Slate candidate Merida Gonzalez Forrest in her run-off campaign against pro-Inner Harbor and industry-backed candidate David Peña. We refuse to go backwards.” – Chloe Torres, TCE Regional Coordinator Photo and video can be found HERE |
