AAA Texas: Gas Prices Fluctuate as Crude Oil Remains Near $100 Per Barrel

The statewide gas price average in Texas is $3.83 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA Texas. That price is four cents less than on this day last week and $1.18 more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $4.33 per gallon, while drivers in the McAllen metro area are paying the least at $3.61 per gallon. The national average is $4.33, which is three cents less than a week ago and $1.26 more than a year ago.

Gasoline prices continue to fluctuate across Texas as elevated crude oil costs and ongoing volatility in the global oil market keep pressure on prices at the pump. While some metropolitan areas have experienced modest declines over the past week, others have seen increases. The bigger concern for motorists is that gasoline prices remain significantly higher than a year ago, when Texas drivers were paying more than a dollar less per gallon. Historically, prices tend to decline during the fall as demand decreases and less expensive winter-blend gasoline becomes more widely available. However, crude oil prices approaching $100 per barrel continue to limit the seasonal relief motorists typically experience.

“Gas prices are moving in different directions across Texas, and that’s a reflection of the continued volatility we’re seeing in the oil market,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “Normally, motorists would expect more consistent price declines this time of year as gasoline demand decreases and winter-blend fuel becomes more widely available. However, with crude oil approaching $100 per barrel, those seasonal savings have been difficult to come by.”
