Austin — The Board of Directors of the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) has selected Gary VanDeaver to serve as TASB’s next executive director.
VanDeaver brings extensive experience in Texas public education, school district leadership, and state policy. He began his career as a vocational agriculture teacher, later served as superintendent of New Boston ISD, and was the state representative for Texas House District 1.
His legislative service included work on House committees focused on appropriations and public education, giving him a practical understanding of the policy and budget issues affecting Texas school districts and locally elected school boards.
“Gary has dedicated his life to serving the cause of public education both inside our districts as a teacher and administrator and for the last 12 years as a leading voice in policy discussions on public education,” said Tony Hopkins, TASB Board president. “The ability to relate to elected school board members who are responsible for governing school districts, to understand the challenges and opportunities in running school districts, and to bring the perspective of the many rural members were key reasons for his selection.”
The Board conducted a careful and thoughtful selection process under the leadership of its selection committee, with support from Korn Ferry as its consultant.
“My entire career reflects my belief that a strong public education system represents the best shot for all Texas children to achieve the American dream,” VanDeaver said. “I am excited to have the opportunity to work with the great people at TASB and thankful to the TASB Board for trusting my leadership as we continue to serve our members and the students they represent.”
VanDeaver officially begins his role with TASB on Oct. 1 and recently stepped down from his legislative seat. He had previously decided not to seek reelection, and the House District 1 race will be determined by voters in November.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from East Texas State University, now East Texas A&M University, and both a master’s degree and doctorate in educational administration from East Texas A&M University.
Under VanDeaver’s leadership, the Association will continue its commitment to member service, local governance, and productive collaboration with education leaders, policymakers, and partners across the state.
