Buckeyes Outlast Wildcat Resurgence in 48-38 Shootout
SULPHUR SPRINGS — Friday night lights in East Texas usually deliver plenty of offensive fireworks, and Gerald Prim Stadium was no exception. In a high-octane non-district showdown, the Gilmer Buckeyes leaned heavily on a dominant ground game to fend off a resilient Sulphur Springs squad, escaping with a thrilling 48-38 victory.
The Buckeyes (featuring standout contributions from stars like senior Zade Taylor and junior running back Tayveon Horne) found success by controlling the line of scrimmage. Gilmer racked up a staggering 353 yards on the ground, punishing the Wildcats’ defense with sustained drives and timely explosive plays.
Ground Attack Fuels the Buckeyes
From the opening whistle, Gilmer established its physical identity. The offensive line opened gaping lanes, allowing the backfield to wear down the Sulphur Springs front. Every time the Wildcats looked poised to shift momentum, the Buckeyes answered with a methodical march or a back-breaking run.
While Sulphur Springs fought tenaciously through the air and tried to trade scores in a frenetic second half, Gilmer’s ability to grind out crucial yards on the ground ultimately drained the clock and sealed the outcome.
Looking Ahead
With the hard-fought road victory in the books, Gilmer improves its resume heading deeper into the fall schedule. The Buckeyes will look to clean up minor defensive miscues before returning home next Friday, Sept. 25, to host Sunnyvale. Sulphur Springs will look to regroup as they aim to bounce back in their first district outing at home against Kaufman.
