Texas A&M Student Builds Engineering and Leadership Skills Through SWEPCO Internship

SHREVEPORT, La. (Sept. 10, 2026)– As students have returned to campus this fall, Jimmy Booth is bringing back more than classroom knowledge. Through a summer internship with Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), he gained hands-on experience working alongside industry professionals while contributing to projects that support customers and communities across the region.
Booth, an Electronic Systems Engineering Technology student at Texas A&M University, spent the summer contributing to projects that support safe and reliable electric service. Through SWEPCO’s engineering internship program, he gained practical experience in engineering design, customer interaction and field operations while working alongside experienced professionals.
By the end of the summer, Booth had independently designed 17 engineering projects, completed 58 service restoration improvement assignments and supported field staking activities that help move projects from design to construction. He also played an important role in organizing and maintaining engineering records, helping ensure critical information remains accessible and useful for future projects and operations.
Throughout the internship, Booth worked closely with SWEPCO engineers on customer projects, field visits and system improvement efforts, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the planning, coordination and collaboration required to deliver reliable electric service.
The experience allowed him to strengthen skills in project planning, mapping, teamwork, customer communication and time management while taking on increasing responsibility as the summer progressed. He also developed creative solutions to overcome challenges and improve efficiency for his team.
As part of SWEPCO’s Engineering Intern Forum, Booth presented his summer accomplishments and reflected on the professional growth he experienced during the program.
“One of our goals is helping students understand that engineering is about more than technical work,” said Adam Keeth, SWEPCO director of Distribution Engineering & Reliability. “The decisions engineers make impact employees in the field, our customers and the overall business. This internship gave these students the opportunity to see those connections firsthand.”
Booth will return to Texas A&M University this fall and plans to return to SWEPCO next summer as he continues preparing for a career in electronic systems engineering technology.
