For some people of a certain age or older than myself, the initials: M.T.X.E. carry a certain mystique, a dream, a work-ethic, and a lifelong philosophy that needs to be rebooted for our current times.
Those initials stand for: Mental Toughness Extra Effort. Although they were coined by the famous former Head Basketball coach Gene Smithson; that is a motto that transcends sports, into nearly all aspects of life.
Gene Smithson was coach of the Wichita State Shockers basketball team from 1978 to 1986. He was die-hard enthusiastic about the team and the community. He was a member of Wichita Consistory and the Midian Shrine in Wichita. Although I wasn’t in sports there, our paths crossed. I was a student at Wichita State University from 1982 to 1988. I, likewise, was a member of Wichita Consistory and Midian Shrine. I was also in Mount Olivet Commandery of Knights Templar #12 in Wichita.
M.T.X.E. was a catchy slogan at that time. It is almost a forgotten footnote, now, which is sad. I don’t think it is simply the trite saying: “Don’t give up”; but rather: “Try again & again, from all angles until you succeed”. Use your brain. Exhaustive perseverance. Remove or ignore all distractions. It is much more than just staying the course: It is having vision and foresight to anticipate obstacles; combined with the sheer-will to carry-on until you prevail.
