The Key City’s only fair and rodeo originated in 1898 as a way for West Texas communities to connect and showcase their garden crops and farm animals. Today, the fair includes 10 days of carnival rides, shopping, live music, tractor pulls, and an arts fair that features competition entries in fine arts, photography, bread and pie making, needlework, woodworking, and quilting. The rodeo portion includes Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association events like steer wrestling, team roping, and barrel racing. Lastly, save room for food: From elephant ears and funnel cakes to stuffed turkey legs and the popular Aggie Fries, there are plenty of fried, sweet, and savory choices.
Every year, Mexico marks its independence with a celebration known as El Grito, or cry, commemorating the moment Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called for the people of Delores, Mexico, to revolt against the colonial Spaniards. El Paso honors the holiday by hosting this annual event that focuses on the heritage, culture, and traditions that the city shares with its neighbor. Festivities include an El Grito ceremony, live music and dance performances, lucha libre wrestling, classic and custom car shows, food trucks, vendors, interactive attractions, and a fireworks display to cap off the day.
Since the inaugural ride in 2004, Conquer the Coast has been a celebration of health and active living. Cyclists of all levels participate by choosing one of three routes for a ride along the coast. The 10-miler offers scenic views and a flat, smooth riding surface for folks seeking a more leisurely pace. The next level, at 21 miles, also features scenic views and an even surface all the way up and back on Coastal Drive. The last option, at 66 miles, takes riders on a loop that includes going over Harbor Bridge and through six different coastal communities, with various elevations for a much more challenging trek. The event begins and ends at Whataburger Field.
