Bruce School Alumni to Reunite in Gilmer for Three-Day Celebration of Legacy and Friendship
GILMER, Texas — Alumni of Bruce School, spanning classes from the 1950s through 1981, will gather in Gilmer this August for a heartfelt reunion honoring the school’s enduring legacy and the generations of students who walked its halls. The three-day event, scheduled for August 7–9, 2026, promises a weekend of nostalgia, recognition, and reconnection in the East Texas community that shaped so many lives.
The festivities begin Friday, August 7, with the “Gilmer City Heritage Tour,” a guided motorcoach journey through the neighborhoods, landmarks, and gathering places that defined the school years of attendees. The tour departs at 1:30 p.m. from the Hilton Garden Inn in Longview, with a second pickup at 2:00 p.m. at the Yamboree Exhibit Building in Gilmer. Organizers describe the experience as a chance to “roll back the clock together,” revisiting the streets and stories that connect alumni to the spirit of the town that raised them.
At 5:00 p.m., the tour concludes at the Yamboree Exhibit Building, where the weekend’s first social event — the “Meet & Greet BBQ: Honoring Our Journey” — kicks off at 6:00 p.m. Attendees can expect classic Texas barbeque, music, and plenty of time to mingle with classmates from across the decades. The relaxed evening is designed as a warm welcome for those returning home and for those who have been away for decades. Guests who boarded the motorcoach in Longview will be transported back to their hotel following the festivities.
Saturday, August 8, features the centerpiece of the reunion: the “Bruce School Heritage Luncheon,” running from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the Yamboree Exhibit Building. This signature event will include speakers, special recognitions, and a program blending reflection with celebration. Organizers say they want every guest to leave feeling that “the effort to attend was not only appreciated — but absolutely worth it.”
Bruce School holds a significant place in Gilmer’s history. Before integration, it served as a vital educational and community institution for Black students in Upshur County. Following the integration of Bruce High School into Gilmer High in 1968, the Bruce School name lived on through Gilmer-Bruce Junior High, which continues to serve students today. The reunion offers a rare opportunity for alumni to gather, share memories, and ensure that the school’s contributions and the achievements of its students are not forgotten.
