171st Anniversary East Texas Sacred Harp Convention to Bring Historic Shape-Note Singing Tradition to Henderson
HENDERSON, Texas — The 171st Anniversary East Texas Sacred Harp Convention will be held August 8–9, 2026, at the Henderson Civic Center in Henderson, Texas. The two-day gathering will celebrate one of East Texas’ oldest musical traditions with community singing, fellowship, and a shared meal open to the public.
The convention will feature traditional Sacred Harp singing from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, and 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 9. A dinner-on-the-ground meal will be served both days from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Sacred Harp singing is an a cappella tradition of four-shape-note music rooted in Christian worship. The tradition takes its name from The Sacred Harp, a tunebook first published in 1844 that remains in use today. Despite its name, there are no harps involved—the “sacred harp” refers to the human voice.
Once widespread throughout East Texas, Sacred Harp singers hosted large community conventions, including up to three-day gatherings that drew hundreds of singers and listeners. Prominent singers, composers, singing school teachers and people who just wanted to listen to the old songs traveled throughout East Texas from Athens to Marshall, Woodville to Gilmer, and all points in between. The East Texas Sacred Harp Convention continues this legacy by preserving a unique musical heritage and providing an opportunity to become a part of this powerful tradition.
No prior musical experience is required, and singers of all ages are welcome. Loaner copies of the Sacred Harp tunebook will be available for those who do not have a book. Singers and listeners may stay for the entire day or come and go as their schedule allows.
