Paseo del Alamo Reopens This Holiday Weekend!

Wed, Jul 1 at 9:20 AM

On July 2, the Alamo will proudly reopen the restored Paseo del Alamo, the site’s historic connection to the San Antonio River Walk. Originally completed in 1981, the Paseo del Alamo was designed to connect the Alamo to the River Walk, linking the state’s #1 and #2 tourist destinations in a meaningful and symbolic way.

As the community marks 45 years since its original debut, the restored Paseo features native landscaping, shaded walkways, and fully ADA-compliant paths with an elevator to increase accessibility between street level and river level. A rainwater-harvesting cistern reduces reliance on local water utilities while honoring the original design’s focus on water as a life-giving resource.

The Paseo also includes a new Alamo Welcome Center with ticketing as well as convenience items for sale. Just as the Alamo Welcome Center at the Menger Hotel greets guests arriving from street level, the Welcome Center at the Paseo will provide a hospitable touchpoint for guests arriving from the River Walk.

Former U.S. Secretary of State and Wife Renda Gift the Alamo $1 million in Support of Transformational Alamo Plan

Former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his wife Renda generously donated $1 million in support of the transformational Alamo Plan that is restoring and redeveloping Texas’ most treasured historic site. The Tillersons’ gift will be recognized outside of the Alamo Welcome Center at the Paseo del Alamo. Guests will be able to visit the Welcome Center at the Paseo for the first time, just as America is celebrating its 250th anniversary on the Fourth of July.

In making the contribution, Secretary Tillerson said: “The Alamo, the Shrine of Texas Liberty, stands as a reminder to us all of the sacrifices required in the pursuit of freedom. Renda and I are proud to be part of the once-in-a-lifetime effort to transform the Alamo into a world-class historic site that will inspire generations to come.”

The Alamo’s Archaeology Team Discovers Second Battle-Era Cannonball In Three Months
The Alamo’s archaeology team has unearthed another fully intact, solid cannonball that can be traced to the Battle of the Alamo era. It is the second cannonball the team has discovered in three months. This latest iron cannonball and the initial bronze cannonball were found in adjacent excavation units outside the northeast corner of the Alamo Church, at approximately the same depth. While additional analysis is forthcoming, based on soil layers and primary sources from the Mexican Army, Alamo experts believe both cannonballs were used during the Siege and Battle of the Alamo.
