Governor Abbott Announces $40.8 Million in Grants to Support Texas Veterans and Their Families

AUSTIN, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) today announced that $40.8 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants will support 190 grants to 160 organizations across the state. Approved by TVC Commissioners last week, FVA grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and local government agencies throughout Texas that provide direct services to veterans and their families. The 190 grants are anticipated to serve over 125,698 veterans and family members statewide.

“Texas is proud to provide crucial services to support the brave men and women who selflessly served our nation in uniform,” said Governor Abbott. “Through this more than $40 million in state grants, we strengthen services for Texas veterans, their families and surviving spouses, while we empower local organizations to provide critical care and support across our great state.”

“The impact of these grants is tremendous. Tens of thousands of veterans and their families across Texas receive vital services and assistance from these organizations,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner. “These grants support a range of services, from clinical counseling to housing and financial assistance to legal aid.”

The FVA grants help fund the following services:

• Clinical Counseling
• Elder Care
• Family & Child Support Services
• Financial Assistance
• Food Meal Services
• Homeless Services
• Home Modification & Repair
• Non-Clinical Mental Health Services
• Pro Bono Legal Services
• Trade Skills Training Services
• Transportation Services
• Service Dog Program for Veterans
• Veteran Treatment Courts
• Veterinary Care Service for Veterans

Veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses who need resources and assistance can find organizations serving their area by county in the Grant Services Directory.

Funding for these grants is generated primarily by the Texas Lottery games designated for veteran support. Other sources of funding for the grants include individual donation options on driver’s licenses, handgun carry licenses, outdoor recreation licenses for hunting and fishing, and vehicle registrations.

Since 2009 through the current 2026-2027 grant cycle, over $400 million in grant funding has been awarded through 1,790 FVA grants.
