Smith County Fatal Crash – 5/22/26

TYLER – On May 22, 2026, at approximately 6:15 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol (HP) Troopers responded to a one-vehicle rollover crash on State Highway 31 near Surrey Trail.

 

A preliminary investigation indicated that a silver GMC Sierra pickup truck was traveling westbound on State Highway 31. The driver of the pickup truck, later identified as Vanessa Vasquez, 18, of Tyler, Texas, drove off the roadway to the north, and the truck rolled over several times before coming to rest in the tree line. The driver, Vasquez, was pronounced deceased on scene. The passenger of the pickup truck, later identified as Toby Cook, 17, of Tyler, Texas, was transported to a local hospital with injuries.
