Historic Upshur Museum presents Sam Houston: Texas Icon

We are pleased to announce Sam Houston: Texas Icon, a new traveling exhibition by Humanities Texas chronicling the life of one of Texas’s most recognizable and complex characters is available for viewing at the Museum.

Sam Houston remains a larger-than-life figure in Texas and American history with a career that spanned the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, annexation and early statehood, and the state’s secession from the Union in 1861. Sam Houston: Texas Icon traces the life and career of Houston from his boyhood in Virginia and Tennessee through his retirement and eventual passing in Huntsville, Texas. Panel topics include “Prelude to War,” “President Again,” “American Indian Relations,” “A Nation Divided,” and “Texas Politics.” In each section, engaging text accompanies dynamic works of art, photographs, and historical documents.

This sixteen-panel, freestanding exhibition will appeal to those already familiar with the legendary leader while also introducing Houston to new audiences in and outside of Texas. The exhibition will be available at the Historic Upshur Museum throughout the Month of May. Text 903 790-1005 to schedule groups for any day.
