Texas DPS Identifies Suspect in Fort Worth Officer-Involved Shooting

DENTON COUNTY – On May 5, 2026, investigators with the Texas Office of the Attorney General (OAG) were serving an arrest warrant for indecency with a child at an apartment complex located in the 3600 block of Outlet Boulevard in Fort Worth. Investigators located the subject of the warrant, identified as Matthew Cruz, 36, hiding in an apartment. Investigators encountered Cruz in a confined area and were in close proximity to him. The investigators gave commands to Cruz, which he disregarded, and observed him to be armed with a knife. Investigators discharged their weapons, striking Cruz, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers or other members of the public were injured.

 

As part of standard OAG practice and at the request of the OAG, the Texas Rangers are investigating this incident. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further information is currently available.
