AUSTIN – The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Office of the Ombudsman has launched a new website, giving the public easy access to file complaints and provide feedback regarding Texas higher education institutions: www.studentsfirst.texas.gov.

Brandon L. Simmons, whom Governor Greg Abbott appointed to lead the Office, also began conducting introductory meetings with public university leaders across the state.

The newly launched website features a portal to accept statutory complaints regarding violations of Senate Bill 17 and Senate Bill 37, the comprehensive higher education reforms passed during the 88th and 89th legislative sessions. The website also links to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s existing student complaint portal through which students can file complaints regarding their college or university after completing the grievance process at their institution.

“Through a user-friendly website and engagement on campuses across Texas, I look forward to a collaborative, productive partnership with our institutional leaders and students,” said Simmons. “Texas leads the nation with top-ranked, rapidly ascending universities, and our office is here to support these great institutions in serving the next generation of Texas students.”

Since taking office, Simmons has engaged with Chancellors and student leaders from universities across the state and plans more outreach in the coming months.

Senate Bill 17 (88th Legislature) prohibits diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices, programs, and mandatory DEI training at Texas public universities and colleges.

Senate Bill 37 (89th Legislature) increases oversight and accountability of Texas higher education institutions.

The public is encouraged to submit feedback regarding any violation of state law to the Ombudsman’s website.
