American Historical Association Monitors TEKS Revisions
The American Historical Association has developed a field guide to help contextualize ongoing revisions to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards for social studies. At its September meeting, the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted an experimental course sequence that will require substantial changes at nearly every grade level from kindergarten through grade 8, with sweeping implications for student learning across the state.
As it meets November 18-21, 2025, in Austin, the SBOE is slated to discuss key topics to be emphasized in the social studies TEKS and the next steps in the revisions process. The Board has tentatively scheduled its discussion of the social studies TEKS (including public testimony) for Wednesday November 19, 2025. On November 14, the AHA sent out an action alert to members in Texas about the TEKS standards and the SBOE meeting. The revisions process will continue over the coming months, and the AHA’s field guide will be updated accordingly.
