This free seminar organized by the nonprofit Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas in cooperation with the Texas Attorney General’s Office and the Texas Press Association will take place at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Denton at the start of the TPA annual convention. 1 p.m. – Tom Williams of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and Haynes and Boone, LLP will conduct a training session providing an overview of the Texas Open Meetings Act. Attending this session fulfills the requirement for public officials or their designees to complete training on the Open Meetings Act under section 551.005 of the Government Code.
2 p.m. – 10-minute break
2:10 p.m. – Texas Public Information Act 101. Tamara Smith of the Texas Attorney General’s Office Open Records Division will conduct a training session providing an overview of the Texas Public Information Act and its exceptions. Attending this session fulfills the requirement for public officials or their designees to complete training on the Public Information Act under section 552.012 of the Government Code.
3:10 p.m. – 5-minute break
3:15 p.m. – Texas Public Information Act Cost Rules. Tamara Smith of the Texas Attorney General’s Office will conduct a training session on TPIA cost rules. This session will cover the basics of the cost rules, including exactly what charges are allowed under the TPIA and the statutory obligations when assessing those charges.
4 p.m. – Seminar concludes.
