Super Bowl LIX kicks off

By Elwyn Henderson

Super Bowl LIX officially kicked off in the Big Easy Monday with Opening Night held at the Caesar’s Superdome, site of the big game on Sunday. Both teams appeared for interview sessions in front of approximately 4,000 media members on the stadium floor and 20,000 or so fans that paid to enter the event.

Opening Night originally was held during the day and was called Media Day. Several years back it was moved to night and called Media Night and then fans were allowed to purchase tickets and watch the pressers of their favorite players from the teams.

As the visiting team in this year’s game, the Eagles appeared first on the scene. Coach Nick Siriani was asked his thoughts about the new kickoff rule that went into play in the 2024 season.

“Obviously, it was new for everybody out there this year, so as every coach did, we adjusted to it. I thought our guys did a nice job. We had some turnovers that we created on there; had some times we had to start with good field position. Again, we just adapted to the rule that was placed in front of us.”

Running Back Saquon Barkley, a new addition this season from the New York Giants during the off-season was asked his thoughts on what it meant to him after went through in New York to get to where he is now with the Eagles.

“It means everything. That’s life though; you might have adversities, ups and downs, but it’s who you are in those moments and I never lost faith and I just kept my head down working and was able to get here and be able to surround myself with unbelievable individuals. When you’re able to do that you’re going to have a lot of success.”

The Eagles were available for one hour and then there was an hour break before the Chiefs came out for their press interviews. Coach Andy Reid was asked his thoughts about going for the 3-peat, something that has never been accomplished in the NFL before.

“Well, I don’t know about that. We have to play the game first. You don’t have time to think about all that. You’re focused in on the job at hand here and playing against a great Eagles team. I think they’re a great team and you can see by their play how great they are on both sides of the ball and special teams. It’s an honor to be here. It’s an honor to be able to play them two. It’s the two standing teams left in the National Football League and it’s great for the NFL; it’s great for these fans.”
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked how the Chiefs are able to accomplish the things they have done the past 7 seasons.

“Yeah, I think it’s just the culture that Coach Reid builds. He does a good job of making everybody feel important and that’s our strength. We through a guy on the football field and he just fits perfectly, so the culture that Coach Reid builds identifies our team.”

The teams are both available at their team hotels each day Tuesday through Thursday for additional interview sessions with different players coming out each day.
There will be a lot more questions asked and many players will end up answering the same questions multiple times by the time Thursday’s sessions are over.

There’s a lot more to come during the week and then on Thursday the movie stars and big name business people begin flying in on private jets to enjoy the weekend and go to the big game. There is never any shortage of things to do during Super Bowl week each year.
