ProComp Sport Martial Arts: Building Leadership Skills Through Martial Arts
As 2025 begins, residents of Gilmer, Texas, are looking for ways to grow, challenge themselves, and achieve new goals. For those seeking a program that goes beyond physical fitness and self-defense, ProComp Sport Martial Arts offers a curriculum specifically designed to develop leadership skills alongside traditional martial arts training.
Located at 202 Buffalo St., Gilmer, Texas, ProComp Sport Martial Arts provides age-appropriate programs for kids as young as 3, teens, and adults. These programs emphasize discipline, confidence, and personal growth while teaching students the values and traits of effective leadership.
Martial Arts as a Leadership Journey
“Martial arts isn’t just about mastering techniques,” says Master Clayton Watkins, head instructor at ProComp Sport Martial Arts. “It’s about building leaders—individuals who are confident, disciplined, and capable of inspiring others. Leadership is woven into every part of our curriculum.”
From their first day on the mat, students are introduced to the principles of leadership, such as:
• Responsibility: Taking ownership of their progress and actions.
• Discipline: Staying focused and committed to their goals.
• Respect: Treating others with kindness and professionalism.
• Communication: Learning to articulate thoughts and motivate others.
These values are reinforced through the structured, age-appropriate curriculum, which encourages students to step up, lead by example, and take on challenges both inside and outside the dojo.
Age-Appropriate Leadership Development
ProComp Sport Martial Arts tailors its curriculum to meet the needs of each age group, ensuring that leadership training is engaging and effective:
• Kids (3 and up): The focus is on building confidence, listening skills, and teamwork. Young students are encouraged to take initiative, follow instructions, and support their peers, laying the foundation for leadership.
• Teens: Programs emphasize decision-making, responsibility, and mentorship. Teens are often given opportunities to assist younger students, helping them develop confidence in their ability to lead.
• Adults: Leadership training for adults focuses on self-discipline, goal setting, and the ability to inspire others through actions and achievements.
“Leadership isn’t just something we teach—it’s something we live,” Watkins explains. “Our students learn by doing, whether it’s leading a drill, mentoring a younger student, or setting a positive example for others to follow.”
Competitions as Leadership Training Grounds
Students at ProComp Sport Martial Arts have opportunities to develop their leadership skills further by participating in competitions through PROMAC (Professional Martial Arts Conference) and NASKA (North American Sport Karate Association).
“These competitions challenge students to step out of their comfort zones,” Watkins says. “They learn how to prepare, stay focused under pressure, and support their teammates—key leadership skills that apply in all areas of life.”
Participation in tournaments also helps students build resilience, handle both victories and defeats gracefully, and develop a growth mindset—all essential traits of a great leader.

Leadership starts at the top, and ProComp Sport Martial Arts is proud to have a team of dedicated instructors who serve as role models for their students:

• Cody Wilson: Focuses on helping students build confidence and develop their leadership potential.

“Our instructors are more than teachers—they’re mentors,” Watkins says. “They embody the qualities we want our students to develop and lead by example every day.”
Building Leaders for the Future
The leadership skills taught at ProComp Sport Martial Arts extend far beyond the dojo. Students carry these skills into their schools, workplaces, and communities, making them better equipped to navigate life’s challenges and inspire others.
“We want our students to leave here as confident, disciplined individuals who can lead in whatever path they choose,” Watkins explains. “Whether they’re standing in front of a team at work, leading a group project at school, or just setting a positive example in their community, the lessons they learn here will stay with them for life.”
