Intercensal Estimates of Total Population and Housing Units: 2010-2020
The U.S. Census Bureau released the first set of 2010-2020 intercensal population and housing unit estimates that includes total population estimates for the nation, states, counties, metropolitan/micropolitan statistical areas, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, Puerto Rico and its municipios along with housing unit estimates for the nation, states and counties. These estimates adjust the Vintage 2020 postcensal population and housing unit estimates to make them consistent with the April 1, 2020, counts from the 2020 Decennial Census. The key advantage of intercensal estimates is their ability to provide a smooth and consistent data series between decades.

To demonstrate the advantages of intercensal estimates, we analyzed data for San Antonio, Texas, and created a graph comparing these estimates with the Vintage 2020 postcensal estimates. Our graph highlights the smoother transition to the post-2020 Vintage 2023 estimates provided by the intercensal estimates.
