AMARILLO – Kathie Turner Jackson makes her triumphant return to the publishing world with the debut of “So Great a Heritage: Biographical Letters from a World War II Soldier” (published by WestBow Press). This poignant work unveils a collection of letters exchanged between a homesick Christian farm boy and his parents, offering a compelling glimpse into the harrowing realities of World War II alongside the unwavering faith that sustained the young soldier.
During the process of preparing her parents’ home for sale, Jackson and her siblings stumbled upon a remarkable treasure trove: over 150 letters accompanied by photographs, penned by their father, Cecil Turner, to his parents both before and during the war. In this biographical compilation, Jackson invites readers to immerse themselves in the profound narrative of her father’s wartime experiences, spanning from the initial deployment to the post-war occupation of Germany.
Through Turner’s heartfelt correspondence, readers are transported into the tumultuous landscape of war, as witnessed by a humble Texan youth whose reliance on faith guided him through nearly five years of separation, peril, and tribulations. Jackson enriches this narrative with insights drawn from Turner’s personal journal and official records, offering a perspective often shielded from his family and censors during wartime.
Reflecting on the rarity of such a comprehensive collection of wartime letters, Jackson emphasizes the invaluable opportunity these documents afford to witness firsthand the resilience and spiritual fortitude of Sergeant Cecil Turner. She hopes readers will be inspired by Turner’s unwavering trust in God, which sustained him through the trials of military service during a critical juncture in American history. Moreover, she believes that Turner’s unique perspective on World War II will offer enthusiasts of the era a fresh and enlightening outlook on this pivotal chapter in the nation’s past.
