UT Tyler Accounting Students Excel on CPA Exam 

University had third highest exam pass rate 

TYLER, Texas (February 22, 2024) – The University of Texas at Tyler for 2023 had the third highest  CPA exam pass rate among Texas public universities and ranked the ninth overall among all Texas  universities. UT Tyler’s pass rate is 58%, which is above the national average of 50%.  

“This distinction epitomizes the rigor of our degree programs, dedication of our faculty and the  preparedness of our students to successfully pass the CPA exam and get a jump start on their  professional careers,” said Dr. Krist Swimberghe, dean of the Soules College of Business. 

The 2023 Uniform CPA Exam is comprised of four sections: financial accounting and reporting,  regulation, business environmental concepts, and auditing and attestation. Students must pass all  four sections, with a minimum grade of 75%, within 18 months of passing the first section.  Beginning this year, the exam will comprise of three core sections — financial accounting and  reporting, regulation, and auditing and attestation — then examinees select from one of three  discipline exams –– business analysis and reporting, information systems and controls, and tax  compliance and planning. 

“Our reputation as a school of choice for aspiring accounting professionals continues to grow,” said  Dr. Roger Lirely, UT Tyler professor of accounting and Department of Accounting, Finance and  Business Law chair. “The changes we have made to our curriculum in preparation for the new exam  format, combined with the evolution of our Master of Science in Professional Accountancy to a  STEM program, should enable us to continue to attract and educate the best students in the  region.”
