Hosted by Master Clayton Watkins of Gilmer/Longview-based ProComp, the community is encouraged to attend this event to participate in seminars led by world champion martial artists and to cheer for local competitors in a large variety of events.

LONGVIEW, TX/USA – January 3, 2024 – On the weekend of January 19-20, 2024, martial artists from all over the country will be coming to Longview to compete in the Texas Open National Martial Arts Championship, rated by PROMAC and NASKA and judged by professionals. A family-friendly event, community members who attend will have opportunities to learn from experts and have fun watching competitors of all ages as they display their hard-earned skills in multiple events, including sparring, weapons, and XMA  “extreme martial arts” that blends all styles and includes high-flying acrobatics.

The tournament promoter is Master Clayton Watkins, a 6th degree black belt who began practicing martial arts at age 9. Mr. Watkins started his first martial arts school at the young age of 17 in Paris, Texas. After he took several years off of running martial arts schools to serve as an East Texas pastor and missionary to Costa Rica, he founded the Gilmer location of ProComp in 2020, just prior to the onset of Covid. Following this successful launch, he established a second location in the Longview Mall. As of today, Master Watkins has trained 136 national champions and a number of world champions, as well.

Notably, Mr. Watkins states that the ProComp philosophy is not about aggression. Rather, he says, “Our martial arts philosophy shapes successful human beings – true champions – ready to make a positive impact on our world. By reinforcing family values such as respect, self-control, honesty and integrity, and sharing traditional martial arts knowledge, our students grow in self-confidence and practical life skills. They learn to confront and overcome their fears and doubts so that they can stand strong among their peers as true leaders.”

The Texas Open tournament will offer the chance for locals to connect with their martial arts community. They will be able to learn from martial arts legends, Hayley Glass and Alex Mancillas. Additionally, those who are interested in starting to learn the skills needed to participate in future tournaments are invited to come to ProComp for a free introductory class.
