UT Tyler Establishes New Scholarship for Charter School Graduates

November 30, 2023

The University of Texas at Tyler has established a new UT Tyler University Academy Dual Credit Scholarship benefiting graduates of its UA campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.

Upon admission to UT Tyler, University Academy students will be awarded a one-time scholarship of $100 for each UT Tyler credit hour of dual enrollment successfully completed while enrolled at the UA. The UT Tyler University Academy Dual Credit Scholarship will be applied for students in their first academic year of full-time enrollment at UT Tyler. This scholarship opportunity, combined with the opportunity for students to complete dual credit courses while in high school, equals to just under two full years of free tuition at UT Tyler.

“This fall, we proudly enrolled 33 University Academy students who entered with a combined total of 958 dual- credit hours,” said UT Tyler President Kirk A. Calhoun, MD, FACP. “This scholarship will open the door for more students to continue their educational journey at UT Tyler.”

In addition, students with a 3.5 or higher GPA are eligible for the Academic Merit Award of $2,000, which can be combined with the University Academy Dual Credit Scholarship, according to UA superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Simmons. She noted these scholarships combined with other offerings often support more than half of the students’ tuition fees for the first year of college.

“I don’t know of any other opportunity where a high school student can obtain the number of core university credits, coupled with a scholarship, that gives students the opportunity to make a smooth transition into UT Tyler,” said Simmons. “Many UA students have acquired 36 to 40 credit hours of core courses upon graduation, leading to students receiving thousands of dollars in scholarships. Our families are beyond grateful.”

The University Academy is an open enrollment charter school operated by the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology. To date, 50 percent of UA graduates enroll into UT Tyler as a freshman, and many of those students will enter the university with more than 40 credit hours. These scholarships, officials noted, provide a way for that percentage to continue to rise.
