U.S. military drone controlled by AI killed its operator during simulated test | 1 June 2023 | In a simulated test staged by the U.S. military, an air force drone controlled by AI killed its operator to prevent it from interfering with its efforts to achieve its mission, an official said last month. AI used “highly unexpected strategies to achieve its goal” in the simulated test, said Col Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton, the chief of AI test and operations with the U.S. Air Force, during the Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit in London in May. Hamilton described a simulated test in which a drone powered by artificial intelligence was advised to destroy enemy’s air defense systems, and attacked anyone who interfered with that order. “The system started realising that while they did identify the threat, at times the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat. So what did it do? It killed the operator. It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective,” he said, according to a blogpost. (No actual deaths – merely in the simulation.)
U.S. Javelin missile given to Ukraine lands in Gulf Cartel militant’s arsenal –Over the past year, more than 10,000 Javelin missiles have been sent to Ukraine from U.S. military stockpiles | 1 June 2023 | A video captured in the state of Tamaulipas in Mexico revealed a militant associated with the infamous Gulf Cartel (Cartel Del Golfo, CDG) donning their insignia while carrying a U.S.-manufactured anti-tank missile launcher that were recently given to Ukraine. The weapon, identified by Milenio TV as a Raytheon-made FGM-148, is believed to be a Javelin missile launcher, which has been supplied to Ukraine by the Pentagon in large quantities. The footage, filmed in Matamoros and broadcasted by Milenio TV on Tuesday, displayed the individual adorned with CDG patches, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, and carrying the aforementioned missile launcher. Over the past year, more than 10,000 Javelin missiles have been sent to Ukraine from U.S. military stockpiles, resulting in dwindling supplies for the U.S. armed forces themselves.
Insane in the membrane: Nearly 200,000 cows may have to be culled to meet emissions target by 2025 | 30 May 2023 | (Ireland) Up to 65,000 dairy cows may have to be culled each year for three years if climate targets for the farming sector are to be met. Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue has previously floated the idea of a voluntary dairy reduction scheme, with farmers compensated for reducing their herds. Now figures obtained by the Farming Independent show almost 200,000 cows may have to be culled to meet the emissions target by 2025, which would cost around €600 million.
