TEXARKANA — Dot’s Ace Hardware invites area grilling and food enthusiasts to their second Boomtown Border City Steak Cookoff to be held on April 29, 2023. Entry fee for steaks is $160, and entry for ancillary categories is $50. This year’s ancillary categories are burgers and “anything cheese,” and over $3,000 in prizes will be awarded to the best in each category. The SCA-sanctioned steak cookoff will be held outside at the hardware store, 3411 Richmond Road in Texarkana, TX beginning at 10am. The public is welcome to attend to watch and ask questions. The event is free, with giveaway opportunities as well as local chefs on hand grilling samples for attendees to taste. Those who purchase or bring a fan for the Community Fan Drive will earn extra prize entries.
The SCA, or Steak Cookoff Association, allows events like these to be held all over the country. Competitors are given points when they participate in a qualifying cookoff, and those points accumulate, allowing winners to compete in nationwide and even worldwide events. This is the second such event Dot’s Ace Hardware has hosted.
“Last year we had a great turnout and everyone had a lot of fun ,” said store manager Lisa Garton. “We knew we wanted to host again, and we’re thankful that Red River Beef Co is sponsoring again by providing the steaks.”
In addition to competing in the cookoff, there is also an opportunity for locals to sign up to be judges. Those interested in judging must become SCA members prior to the event and must attend a mandatory judges class the evening before the event. Advance registration directly through the SCA is required and can be done at https://steakcookoffs.com/
Anyone with a grill and the desire to compete can enter the steak cookoff. While the steaks are included in the entry fee courtesy of Red River Beef Co., competitors will bring their own grills and supplies. Complete rules can be found on the SCA website.
Dot’s Ace Hardware has long been a source for grills and grilling supplies in Texarkana and carries a full line of charcoal, pellets, rubs, sauces and seasonings from local brands like Forand Family Barbecue, Jonesy Q BBQ, and nationwide brands like Meat Church. The annual Community Fan Drive collects new fans to be distributed to seniors in need in the community in preparation for summer heat. Dot’s is one of several drop-off locations for fans and will be donating 100 fans to the drive.
