Townes Van Zandt Tribute Takes Place in Ben Wheeler

The fifth annual Tribute to Townes Van Zandt takes place from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, March 5, at The Forge Bar & Grill in Ben Wheeler. Presented by the Van Zandt Arts & Cultural District Foundation, performers pay tribute to the most influential Texas songwriter of the 20th century. READ MORE.

The Ellis County Courthouse in Waxahachie is named for Richard Ellis who presided over the constitutional convention that created the Republic of Texas in 1836.
Texas Independence Day Is March 2

It’s no secret that East Texas played a part in the formation of Texas. Cities like Jefferson and Nacogdoches were among other early European settlements that began to thrive even before Texas broke from its Mexican control.

On March 2, 1836, settlers in Texas declared independence from Mexico to become the Republic of Texas. Eighteen of the 60 signers of Texas Declaration of Independence were from East Texas. Richard Ellis — the namesake of Ellis County — was elected president of the constitutional convention that created the Republic of Texas. READ MORE.
