AUSTIN – The American Federation for Children – Texas (AFC-TX) today issued a statement on Governor Abbott’s call for Education Savings Accounts for all Texans, similar to what was recently passed in Arizona, Iowa, and Utah. In his remarks at his first Parent Empowerment Night hosted in Corpus Christi, the Governor discussed the ESAs that were created in 2020 for special needs students and called for them to be expanded to every child in Texas. More than 450 Texans attended the event tonight.
In his remarks, the Governor stated, “In 2020, I created a limited Education Savings Account for special needs students. It has been so successful, the Legislature is proposing to increase funding for it. Now it’s time to expand ESAs to every child in Texas to give all Texas parents the ability to choose the best education option for their child.”
“Parents across Texas are clamoring for greater educational freedom, and Governor Abbott is responding with vigor,” said AFC-TX spokesman Nathan Cunneen. “AFC-TX is grateful that the Governor is making this critical issue a priority and calling for Education Savings Accounts for every child in Texas. We are committed to working alongside him and the entire Legislature to empower parents with the ability to choose the school that gives their children the best chance to succeed.”
A poll released by the University of Houston on Monday showed widespread support for school choice, including 62% of Texans living in rural counties supporting school vouchers for all Texas students. |
