Local playwrights encouraged to submit scripts through Dec. 30 as part of KC Theatre’s first-ever New Works Festival
Kilgore College Theatre will accept scripts from local playwrights through Dec. 30 as part of the first-ever New Works Festival.
“We invite playwrights of all experience levels and backgrounds to submit their works,” said Micah Goodding, KC Theatre instructor. “The New Works Festival is not just an event, but a celebration of a continuously ongoing process – the creation of new work.”
Playwrights can submit their work by visiting www.kilgore.edu/drama. There is a $20 submission fee that will help to support the production of the 2023 KC Theatre New Works Festival.
Three finalists will be notified on Jan. 1, 2023, with KC Theatre students presenting staged performances of scenes from the three finalists Feb. 23-26 in the Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Center.
For more information on the New Works Festival, contact Micah Goodding at mgoodding@kilgore.edu.
Submission process:
KC Theatre will employ a blind submission process to avoid unintentional bias on the part of our team of qualified readers. Scripts that move into the semifinal round will be reviewed by a selection committee that will have access to all information regarding the submitted play.
Each of the three selected scripts will be paired with KC Theatre actors and directors for a 30-40 hour rehearsal process culminating in four “workshop style” staged performances.
The finalists will be invited to engage with the director prior to this period of exploration with actors. A moderated Q&A with the audience, playwright, director and producers will follow each presentation. The performances and Q&A sessions will be live-streamed on www.kilgore.edu/drama.
Submissions for 2023 are limited to one script per author. Once a script has been submitted and enters the review process, KC Theatre is not able to accept revisions. Revisions to the three final scripts, however, are welcome as part of the development process.
Please note that KC Theatre will also not provide feedback on unselected scripts, and there are no refunds.
Script criteria:
- Scripts must be legibly typed in a 12-point font in standard play script format with clearly marked character names connected to their dialogue.
- Scripts must also be submitted as a single PDF with numbered pages where the file name contains the show’s title and author’s last name(s).
- The cover page of the script should contain the show’s title only; please also insert a copyright-protected statement.
- The second page of the script should contain a brief synopsis of the play (less than 250 words) and a complete cast list that includes each character’s name, age and description.
