Great works of previous ages often serve as lessons and inspiration for today’s students and performers. In its Golden Twenties concerts this week Mount Vernon Music performs compositions from previous centuries — like continuing a thread of past cultural achievements.

Sometimes popular music follows a similar pattern. As a host on Willie’s Roadhouse Radio Sunny Sweeney shares the rich tradition of country western music that preceded today’s artists. Read more in this issue.

Sweeney Hosts New Show on Willie’s Roadhouse Radio

Longview native Sunny Sweeney hosts a new morning show on SIRIUS XM radio called Sunny Side Up. Sweeney is now officially a weekday morning DJ, manning the airwaves from 5 to 11 a.m. It’s part of a channel known as Willie’s Roadhouse Radio, which offers four decades of Country Western classics from artists like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, and Patsy Cline. READ MORE.

Lucky Strike Girl Born in Cherokee County

Janice Jarratt, known as the “Lucky Strike Girl” was born on October 19, 1914, in Jacksonville, Texas, Cherokee County. Her father was C.D. Jarratt of Craft, known for shipping the first carload of tomatoes from Cherokee County on June 14, 1897. Jarratt grew up in San Antonio, and later became the “Sweetheart of the Texas Centennial” at the State Fair of Texas in 1936. READ MORE.

Palestine’s Hot Pepper Festival Goes ‘Loco’

Palestine’s annual Hot Pepper Festival draws thousands of visitors for a fun day of live music and foodie contests from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, October 22. This year’s theme is “Let’s Get Loco in 2022.” The word “loco” means crazy in Spanish but is also part of the English word “locomotive” and pays homage to the town’s railroad past. READ MORE.

Mount Vernon Music Journeys to the ‘Golden Twenties’

Mount Vernon Music journeys back in time in a performance of “The Golden Twenties” at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, October 16, in the Mount Vernon Music Association Performance Hall. The concert includes music from three centuries — the 2020s, 1920s, and 1820s. READ MORE.
