HAWKINS – The men’s and women’s soccer teams will play a home doubleheader for the first time this season Thursday as they host Central Baptist College. The women will play at 2 p.m. with the men following at 4 p.m.
The JCU women’s soccer team is 0-2 to start the season. They will meet Central Baptist, who is off to a 2-2-1 start to the year.
Gabriela Benavides leads the team with two goals scored. She also has three shots on goal through two games. Emmalee Lopez and Kayla Ochoa have also contributed one goal each. Brisa Ibarra has yet to score a goal, but is tied with Benavides for the most shots on goal for the team with three so far.
Hailey Rivera and Jazul Amaya have alternated at the goalkeeper position. Rivera has played in both games and started in one game as she has played just over 118 minutes. She has recorded five saves while allowing seven goals. Amaya got the start in the game at Oklahoma City. She played for just under 48 minutes, allowing two goals while notching seven saves.
The JCU men’s soccer team is coming off its first win of the season as Ignacio Gutierrez booted in a goal in the 83rd minute to propel the Bulldogs past Howard Payne, 3-2 last Saturday. The Bulldogs are 1-1 in the early season. Central Baptist comes into the matchup 3-1 on the year after falling to Texas A&M – Texarkana last Friday.
Gerardo Martinez, Sergio Escareno, Ignacio Gutierrez, and Johan Arevalo have all contributed one goal to the team’s four goals scored through two games. Arevalo leads the team with eight shots. Martinez has taken five shots and Escareno has shot four times.
Martinez leads the team in shots on goal with five. Arevalo follows with three shots on goal. Escareno, Gutierrez, Axel Guzman, and Benito Leon all have two shots on goal this season.
