JCU VOLLEYBALL GOES 1-1 ON FINAL DAY OF PHILANDER SMITH TOURNAMENT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Jarvis Christian University volleyball team played 10 sets on an action-packed final day at the Philander Smith Tournament. The Bulldogs lost the first match to Southwestern Christian, 3-2. JCU roared back in a five-set thriller to take the 3-2 win against Williams Baptist. The Bulldogs move to 2-2 on the year.

 

GAME 1 VS. SOUTHWESTERN CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

The Bulldogs struck quick and won the first two sets of the match (25-22, 25-18) before Southwestern Christian answered by taking the third and fourth sets (25-20, 25-18). The fifth set went back and forth before Southwestern Christian eventually pulled away late to take the set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.

 

Asiah West and Aaronyana Wilson each had nine kills in the match, while Jai Johnson and Shayla Montemayor followed with seven kills each. As a team, the Bulldogs managed 47 kills in the match.

 

Chloe Buchanan led the way with 13 digs. Kaia Brooks recorded 12 digs, Amariah Kendrick had 11, and Johnson finished with 10. The Bulldogs had 68 digs in total – a team-high in the young season.

 

GAME 2 VS. WILLIAMS BAPTIST 

The Bulldogs found themselves in a hole early as Williams Baptist took the first two sets of the match (25-18, 25-21). JCU answered by taking the third set, 25-21, to stay alive. The Bulldogs then continued their momentum as they took the fourth set, 25-22. JCU scored the first point of the fifth set and then never looked back after taking the 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs won the fifth set, 15-11, and won the match, 3-2.

 

Jai had a team-high 19 kills through five sets of action. Kalikyah Timmons recorded 13 kills and Asiah West tallied 11 kills as team collected 66 kills in the match.

 

Kaia Brooks had a game-high 23 digs. Johnice Hubbard contributed 12 digs as the team totaled 77 digs.

The Bulldogs have a break before they travel to Hot Springs, Arkansas to take on Champion Christian at 5 PM on Wednesday, September 7.
