New KC star steel sculpture will be unveiled Friday morning at KC-Longview

Kilgore College will host a ceremony Friday, May 27, to unveil the college’s new KC star steel sculpture.

The new KC star will be unveiled at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Center Street and South Street on the KC-Longview campus.

The steel sculpture, which is 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide, was created by local artist and former KC instructor Joel Laws.

In attendance at the ceremony will be Joel Laws, artist; Christina Cavazos, Arts!Longview director; Toni Erskine, Arts!Longview board president; and Dr. Brenda Kays, KC president.

“At Arts!Longview, we are thrilled about the KC star sculpture. Promoting and preserving public art remains among the core pillars of Arts!Longview’s mission,” Cavazos said. “We believe public art, like the KC star sculpture, adds value to the cultural, economic and aesthetic vitality of our community.”

Cavazos said in addition to enhancing the beautification efforts in downtown Longview, she believes this sculpture also will engage and inspire those who live, work and visit the community.
