Historic Groundbreaking Launches Republic of Texas Legation Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Ceremony will honor the diplomats whose service helped make Texas the 28th state.

WASHINGTON, D.C.,— November 4, 2026 The Daughters of the Republic of Texas will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the beginning of construction of the Republic of Texas Legation Memorial on Wednesday, November 5, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the memorial site, 630 Indiana Avenue NW in Washington, D.C.

The ceremony will commemorate the representatives of the Republic of Texas who served as diplomats to the United States and helped make possible the annexation of Texas as the nation’s 28th state.  Congressman Lloyd Doggett will join members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas to celebrate the groundbreaking and the start of construction of the memorial.

From 1836 to 1845, the Republic of Texas maintained diplomatic missions in Washington City, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and other international capitals. In Washington, Texas diplomats pursued recognition, negotiated matters of commerce and boundaries, and advanced the Republic’s goal of joining the United States. Congress authorized the memorial in 2020 through the Republic of Texas Legation Memorial Act.

“The history of the Texas Legation did not end with the annexation of Texas in 1845. Today, it lives on through the strength of the multicultural and multilingual communities that make our Lone Star State so dynamic. With this commemoration, those who visit our nation’s capital will have the opportunity to learn about this turning point.”

—U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett

“A commemoration of those who represented Texas at such a unique point in our state’s history will serve as a source of pride for all those who visit our nation’s capital. I am pleased Congress has recognized the important role the Texas Legation played.”

—U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz

The memorial features a lone star-shaped base and a five-sided white granite plinth. Inscriptions on the monument tell the story of the Texas Legation, showcase a map of the Republic of Texas, and recognize the delegates who came to Washington to represent the Republic. The site is near several historic locations where those diplomats lived and worked.
