A 911 CALL AND NICOLE BROWN SIMPSON

By JAMES A. MARPLES

I was interested to read the news report on the keynote speech given by the sister of the slain Nicole (Brown) Simpson, Denise Brown, to a conference held in Longview on October 13th. Denise is the ex-sister-in-law to the late football star and actor, Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson who died in 2024.
There are existing audio-tapes from April 1993, when Nicole dialed 911 after O.J.broke down the back door in a mad rage,  and she frantically told dispatchers: “….He’s going to beat the (expletive for excrement) out of me”. O.J. is heard in the background yelling violently. It is significant that Nicole Brown Simpson was killed the FOLLOWING YEAR in June 1994.
Although that recording was played at the time of the Trial, I believe that under the Communications Act of 1934, such recordings made to 911 should be treated with the same gravity as testimony to Law-Enforcement Officials, because that Act makes it criminal to make false or misleading calls. If that Act was simply enforced to the hilt, a lot of social ills never would have gotten a foothold. Even indecent language, excessive violence, and pornographic or suggestive scenes wouldn’t have hidden on Cable TV or Internet if this Act had carried the same weight it once did. My point? The solution: Make 911-calls equal to sworn testimony under oath, with no recanting. That, would give victims courage, (especially female victims who feel bullied or dependent) to see criminal charges pressed, even if a perpetrator later tries to manipulate them.  If my proposal had been “Law” in 1993, police would have had an added year to save Nicole Brown Simpson’s life.  Society needs to wake-up to the warning-signs of domestic violence, and nail perpetrators faster.
