Gilmer JV edges Sulphur Springs JV, 16-13

Gilmer’s Junior Varsity heads to Sunnyvale Thursday (tonight) for their fifth non-district game after winning a thriller with defensive effort against Sulphur Springs, 16-13.
The Wildcats struck first with a touchdown and a point after kick in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
The J.V. Quarterback, Phoenix Ross, countered with two touchdown passes to Aiden Cunningham in the second quarter. The first TD went for eight yards and Ross followed it with a 2-point conversion pass to Cunningham to take the lead at 8-7. On the second score, Cunningham raced 67 yards to pay dirt for six more points. The point after attempt failed.
Ross completed 10 of his 14 pass attempts for 139 yards. Cunningham accounted for five catches and 101 yards.
Bryce Bewley caught three passes for 21 yards, Brayden McDonald one for 12 yards, and Tristen Crocker one for 10 yards.
Much of the ground game centered around the seven runs by Jayden Miller for 74 yards. Ross added 26 yards on five carries, Crocker eight yards on three carries, and Ayden Bray picked up four on his two carries.
The Wildcats gained 122 yards on the ground and completed 7 of 14 passes for 71 yards. After trailing 14-7 at halftime, in the third quarter, Sulphur Springs turned opportunistic with a fumble recovery for a touchdown which narrowed the score to 14-13.
When Sulphur Spring attempted to kick the extra point to tie the game, Lincoln Dodd burst through to block the kick. Ian Langford then picked up the bouncing ball and raced it 95 yards to score two points for the Buckeyes.
Sulphur Springs was not done for. Their final drive of the night stalled out at the Buckeye five to seal the Gilmer win.
