What: Las Vegas Star ‘Travis Powell’
Elvis Presley fans can rejoice in their adoration for the King of Rock ’n’ Roll with a tribute performance on Oct 17th 6:00 pm.
Travis Powell, one of the top Elvis tribute artists nationwide, will perform at the Memorial City Hall Performance Center, Marshall Texas.
Special guests Shake Rattle and Roll and Edge of Reality will open the show starting at 6 p.m.
Powell’s concert, titled “That’s the Way It is” after Elvis’ 12th album, is meant to transport audiences back to a time when Elvis was charismatically performing.
“What Travis does is a tribute to Elvis, keeping Elvis’ music alive, and people really enjoy a concert where they feel the same experience as when Elvis performed,” promoter Steve Fountain said about his client. “Travis is the closest thing to Elvis Presley on this planet.”
Powell’s fascination with Elvis started from a very young age. He started singing Elvis songs while still in grade school, learning the lyrics after his mother, a music director, played Elvis songs for him.
“I loved Elvis’ music,” Powell said. “Growing up as a kid, it got me through a lot of things. Being an Elvis tribute artist was a way I could keep his legacy alive.”
In adulthood, Powell would go on to become the Las Vegas headliner at the Westgate Resort Hotel, previously named the International, where Elvis had performed and sold out numerous concerts. Powell’s shows similarly sold out quickly, and now he’s been made a regular star in Las Vegas. After he performed for two sold-out crowds on the same stage where Elvis had legendary shows, Powell was asked to return to recreate some of Elvis’ most celebrated shows.
“With this concert, you’re going to feel like you’re in Las Vegas,” Fountain said. “There’ll be drummers, guitarists, backup singers.”
“We’re going to take you back to the 1970s and show you what it was like to be in the room when Elvis was singing,” Powell said. “We try to get it as close as we can to what it was like when Elvis was on stage.”
The shows are bringing more young people out, and Powell enjoys meeting his fans, noting he’s yet to have a bad experience with one. Even if they get emotional when they see him after a performance, the tribute artist feels like he’s done his job, because his goal is to give his fans something to relate to.
He admits that while he isn’t Elvis himself, what he’s trying to do is create an atmosphere where people can have fun, relive the magic of Elvis in an authentic way, and have a good time.
