AMARILLO, Texas — July 31, 2026 — Amarillo author and longtime business leader Joel Rakow, Ed.D., has released Life in Woke America: A Family’s Story of Truth and Betrayal Under Fire, a geopolitical thriller set largely in Amarillo and across the Texas Panhandle. The novel follows Xavier King, a former foster youth and Army private whose discovery of a real-world Chinese plot places his career, reputation, and hopes for a family in jeopardy.
Although the title signals a deeply polarized America, the novel’s emotional center is deeply human. Xavier is a young man shaped by foster care, military service, betrayal, and a persistent desire to belong. As institutions close ranks against him, he must decide how much he is willing to risk to defend the truth while protecting the people and future he loves.

Rakow’s own experiences informed the novel’s themes. After more than five decades as a third-generation Democrat, he publicly left the party in 2020. His background in cybersecurity, software development, executive leadership, and advocacy for children in foster care also contributed to the book’s focus on institutional power, personal agency, and the long-term effects of childhood instability.
“Xavier’s story is an ode to the role liberty plays in shaping the American spirit,” Rakow said. “I wanted to write a suspenseful story that also asks what truth, family, courage, and responsibility look like when the institutions a person trusts become the opposition.”
The novel opens with Xavier preparing to testify before Congress about what he witnessed and how Army bureaucrats tried coercing him to not say. From there, the story expands beyond national-security suspense to describe Xavier’s determined and intimate struggle to create the stable family life he never experienced as a child.
