CHRISTUS Health in Longview performs first Ion robotic bronchoscopy
(LONGVIEW, Texas) – CHRISTUS Good Shepherd has successfully performed its first Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, marking another milestone in the health system’s continued investment in advanced, reliable and integrated cancer care.“The Ion platform represents a significant advancement in the way we diagnose lung cancer,” Donty said. “Its robotic precision allows us to safely reach small nodules that were once much more difficult to biopsy, giving patients access to earlier, more accurate diagnoses and, ultimately, more treatment options.”
Donty said the technology also allows doctors to diagnose and stage lung cancer during the same procedure using endobronchial ultrasound, often eliminating the need for additional procedures.
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer screenings are recommended for people aged 50 to 80, who currently or used to smoke and have at least a 20 pack-year history of smoking.
Before deciding to be screened, people should discuss with their healthcare provider outlining the benefits, limitations and potential harms of screening procedures.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related cancer deaths, and nearly half of cases are diagnosed after the disease has already spread, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis.
