Texas’ Least Affordable Housing Markets Revealed

New research from Compare the Market has revealed the Texas housing markets where homeownership is most out of reach relative to local earnings.

The analysis found that Fredericksburg is Texas’s least affordable housing market, with an estimated home value of $671,058. Based on the state’s average salary of $61,235, prospective buyers would need around 11 years of income to purchase a typical home.

Other Texas locations ranking among the state’s least affordable housing markets include:

  • Mineral Wells (#2) – Estimated home value of $473,382, requiring 7.7 years of salary to buy.
  • Kerrville (#3) – Estimated home value of $421,362, equivalent to 6.9 years of income.
  • Austin-Round Rock (#4) – Estimated home value of $416,160, requiring 6.8 years of salary.
  • Port Lavaca (#5) – Estimated home value of $390,150, equating to 6.4 years of earnings.
